Ajit Singh Grewal
In Loving Memory
Ajit Singh Grewal, born May 5, 1932, in Chak 461, Punjab, British India, passed away peacefully at home and surrounded by family in Hathur, India on the morning of January 3rd, 2026.
Growing up in a village with no running water, electricity, or automobiles, Ajit’s childhood was characterized by the warmth of a household of an astounding 45 relatives. After the Partition of India in 1947, he came with his family east out of Pakistan and back into their ancestral village of Baddowal. Two years later, the family settled down in the Hathur home Ajit would spend most of his life in.
He married his loving wife of nearly three decades, Gian, in January of 1952 and spent his life as a dedicated farmer. After his father’s death in 1988, he served as the lambardar, or headman, of his village. Later in life, he moved to be closer to children and grandchildren, first arriving in Delhi, California in 2007. Ajit would later reside with family in Manteca, from 2012 until December of 2025. A strong-willed and determined spirit, he cultivated a number of close friends and acquaintances wherever he went.
Ajit is preceded in death by his wife, Gian, and his parents Isar and Naranjan. The eldest of four children, he is survived by sisters Sarjit (widowed) and Pavitar (Roop, widowed) as well as a brother, Bhajan (Harpal). He will be deeply missed by his children Nirmal (Mandeep), Pritpal (Baljinder), Gurdeep (Karnail), and grandchildren Jatinder (Ruvaljeet), Navdeep, Satinder (Ravneet), and Harminder (Ashish). Ajit also leaves behind seven great-grandchildren; namely, Sachman, Sachleen, Veer, Arjun, Amyara, Anaya, and Mannat.
While his final rites have been conducted, a prayer service will be held Sunday, January 11th, in the old country. Condolences may be relayed to the family in care of Jatinder Grewal.
