In Loving Memory

It is with shattered hearts that we announce the passing of Bruno Zanker, who left this world peacefully at home on August 6, 2026, surrounded by his family after more than sixteen and a half extraordinary years of life.

Bruno was born on January 2, 2010, and joined the Zanker family shortly thereafter, where he became a beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, uncle, companion, protector, and friend to the countless people and animals lucky enough to know him.

Bruno lived an incredibly full and adventurous life. Alongside his mom, Shayna, he called Connecticut, Boston, Manhattan, Philadelphia, New Hampshire, Harlem, and New Jersey home. At fifteen years old, he even took his first flight to Florida to celebrate his birthday. Wherever life took him, Bruno was happiest as long as he was surrounded by the people he loved.

Anyone who knew Bruno knew there was simply no one else like him. With sparkling brown eyes, an unmistakable underbite, and a personality much larger than his little poodle frame, Bruno was intelligent, curious, stubborn, hilarious, deeply affectionate, and extraordinarily sensitive. He had an uncanny ability to sense what his people were feeling. If someone he loved was hurting, Bruno hurt too.

From the time he was a puppy, Bruno was fascinated by sirens. If he heard one outside, he would insist on following it for several city blocks, standing upright on his back legs, kicking his front paws in the air, and doing his best impression of the siren himself. Even hearing one on television could inspire a performance.

He was equally passionate about his toys and accumulated more of them than any dog could possibly need. It became customary that if Bruno had to be left home for more than a few hours, whoever returned was expected to come bearing a new one.

Bruno also took the time to stop and smell the flowers—literally. He loved trips to Home Depot to walk through the garden center and smell the plants, and he gave the same attention to any bouquets brought into the home.

Although small in stature, Bruno was fiercely loyal and protective of the people and animals he loved. He stood up for his friends without hesitation, and many of his closest canine friends and “brothers” happened to be some of the largest and toughest dogs around. Bruno never seemed to notice the size difference.

During his years living near Central Park, rainy days became something special. Bruno loved walking in the rain, and he and his mom would walk all the way through the park while almost everyone else stayed home, leaving one of the busiest places in the world seemingly all to themselves. Those quiet, rainy walks became some of their most treasured memories.

Perhaps nowhere, however, was Bruno happier than at the family lakehouse in New Hampshire.

Bruno discovered his love of the lake at ten years old and never looked back. From then on, he would spend entire days swimming back and forth along the shoreline, barking endlessly with his tail wagging, and would have happily continued well into the night if anyone let him. Getting Bruno out of the lake was considerably harder than getting him into it.

At the lake, Bruno was completely alive.

Throughout his life, Bruno demonstrated remarkable resilience. He faced challenges and defied the odds time and time again, always finding his way forward with the same strength, determination, and love of life that made him Bruno.

He was lovingly known by many names, including “Shrimp,” “Honey Pie,” and “Beautiful Boy.” He brought laughter, comfort, companionship, and an immeasurable amount of love to his family and to the many people and animals fortunate enough to share his life.

Bruno was predeceased by his beloved brothers, Hershey and Ziggy. He leaves behind his mom, Shayna; his grandparents; his aunt Jodie; his “little” brother, Bernie; countless friends, both human and canine; and more toys than anyone quite knows what to do with.

Bruno spent his final hours at home, surrounded by his family, being held, kissed, comforted, and loved. He passed peacefully in his mom’s arms after a life filled with more love than words could ever adequately describe.

Bruno’s passing leaves an irreplaceable hole in the hearts of those who loved him.

But what a life he lived.

A life of lake water and barking, rainy walks through Central Park, flowers and sirens, adventures and airplanes, mountains of toys, sparkling brown eyes, an unforgettable underbite, friendship, laughter, and so much love.

He lived fully. He loved deeply. He defied the odds. And he was loved beyond measure.

There will never be another Bruno.

Rest peacefully, sweet boy. We are so proud of you.

You were, and always will be, our sunshine.
