In Loving Memory

Charles Brent Andrews “Calhoun”

Charles Brent Andrews, 77, nicknamed Calhoun in college. A name that stuck with him throughout his adult life, passed away on January 25th, 2025, after a short battle with cancer.

Brent Andrews was born July 6th, 1947, in Cass County, Iowa to Charles Drexel Andrews (Chuck) a Norma Jean (Ray) Andrews. He spent his boyhood with his parents and sister (Judy) in Atlantic, Iowa and Carroll, Iowa where his father owned and operated Andrews Roofing and managed the family farm. Chuck bought his son a 1966 Corvette Sting Ray in Sexy Nassau Blue as he went off to college if he promised to never smoke cigarettes. A promise that he did keep.

Brent Andrews graduated from Morningside University in 1969. Morningside University is a private university affiliated with the United Methodist Church and located in Sioux City, Iowa. He was in the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and enjoyed lifelong friendships with his college brothers and especially enjoyed greeting 100 of his closest friends in Okoboji, Iowa each year for their annual golf outing. He was known for his quick wit and sense of humor.

In 1969 he married his wife Carli Renee (Stolpe) Andrews and had his first and only child, Nicholas Brent Andrews. Carli and Brent divorced a few years later and spent nearly 25 years apart before rekindling their relationship. Our family lost Carli Andrews to drowning on July 6th, 1998, during a holiday weekend boating accident in Okoboji, Iowa.

Brent Andrews married his second wife Marsha (Vanden Heuvel) of Rock Rapids, Iowa and helped raise his stepdaughter, Allison Wessels. Brent owned two bars in Rock Rapids, “The Filling Station Bar” and “The Office Lounge”. Brent got out of the bar business and moved his family to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he sold trailers, wheels and tires for thirty years. He also had fireworks stands each summer in Sioux Falls. Marsha and Brent divorced in August of 1996.

Brent moved to Scottsdale, Arizona in 2006 to be closer to his son Nick Andrews. Nick’s wife Pamlea Andrews gave birth to Austin Barrett Andrews (18) in June of 2006 and to their second son Nicholas Gunner-Ray Andrews (17) in August of 2007.

Brent Andrews began dating longtime friend Jeanne Swenson whose family has roots in Larchwood, Iowa. They dated for over seven years before Brent moved to Mesquite, Nevada and worked in the Casino and the adjoining Palms golf course for six years.

Brent moved back to Scottsdale in April of 2024 to be closer to his son and grandsons. Nick married his new wife Jacque Rene (Moultrie) Andrews on November 9th, 2024. This was a special day for our family. Brent in suit and tie looking as handsome as ever and his dear friend Jeanne were there to celebrate the union with the grandsons and our closest friends and family.

Brent enjoyed cold beer and steak his whole life. Calhoun was known by his friends as someone who was fun to be around. He enjoyed social interactions, was quick-witted, and laughed out loud often.

He spoke highly of his son, (who he referred to as Nick-a-roon), his grandsons, his sister Judy Knudsen and his brother-in-law Russ Knudsen. He got a daughter-in-law daughter with Nick marrying Jacque and she enjoyed having dad around.

He loved watching football, and he rooted for the Chiefs. He enjoyed reading the newspaper. He was fond of dogs and recalled his dog Pepper and Jeanne’s dog Barky. He was allergic to potatoes. His favorite preacher was Joel Osteen.

He was proud to have donated 24 acres of land now referred to as “Andrews Access” located along the North Raccoon River with recreational stream fishing and hunting in Glidden, Iowa.

His best friends include Steve Wilken, Ivan Streit and Jerry Landreville.

He will be remembered as being a positive person who was fun to be around.

Brent was preceded in death by his parents and wife Carli Rene Andrews (Stolpe) (1998). He is survived by his son, Nick Andrews of Scottsdale, AZ and his sister Judith Andrews Knudsen and Russell Knudsen of Omaha, NE. Their children Karree Knudsen Hillman and Kelly Hillman, Andrew Knudsen, Jill Knudsen. Great nieces Kelsey Hillman McDonald and Conner and son Brent’s Great great nephew baby Callum McDonald and Natalie Hillman.

The family will have a private celebration of life.
