With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for her life, we celebrate the homegoing of Mary Nicholas, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Mary’s journey began in Goldsboro, North Carolina, born to Chester Lee Carr and Dalphine Davis. She spent her early years there before moving to Washington, D.C., where she would graduate high school and later plant deep roots in Maryland.
Mary was a woman who gave her heart fully and freely. For many years, she worked as a file clerk at Darcars Toyota in Silver Spring, MD, showing up every day with quiet strength and dedication. But her true calling — her greatest joy — was being with the people she loved.
She was the heart of her family, the one who brought everyone together. Whether it was a holiday, a backyard cookout, or just a regular weekend, Mary loved gathering with her family, playing spades, sharing laughs, and serving up her legendary cooking — food made with so much love you could taste it in every bite.
Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She adored them and spent as much time as she could with them, always full of jokes, hugs, and wisdom. She had a way of making you feel seen, heard, and deeply loved.
Mary also cherished her friendships. Her best friend, Iva Hinnant, was more like a sister — a bond forged in love and loyalty. And in her final years, when mobility became difficult, another dear friend, Alfred Wilson, stepped in with unwavering kindness and care. Al was a blessing during a time when she needed it most, and his presence brought her great comfort and joy.
To know Mary was to know compassion, strength, humor, and a fierce loyalty. She gave freely, loved deeply, and touched countless lives with her caring heart.
She now reunites with her parents, Chester Lee Carr and Dalphine Davis; her sister Cynthia Speight; and her brothers Chester Speight and Linwood “Tommy” Davis — all of whom welcomed her home with open arms.
Mary’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her most:
Her devoted son, Anthony Carr, whom she often called her “everything”; her loving daughter-in-law Nicole Carr; and her four cherished grandsons: Xzavier, Dominic, Rocco, and DeAngelo Carr.
She also leaves behind her brother Tareyton Speight; her sisters Dolphine Neal of New York, NY, and Vanessa Kelly of Atlanta, GA; her nephews Jermaine Speight, Jermaul Speight, James "Man" Speight, Tareyton “TJ” Speight Jr., Carl Jerome Williams, John Tyrell Neal, Phillip Cooper, Linwood “Big Boy” Davis, Terance Davis, and Tyrone Love; her nieces Talia Speight, Maya Speight, Marshella Reid, Sharon Davis Jumoke, and Kisha Davis; goddaughter Keona Johnson; godson Rakeem Robinson; and a host of other family members and friends who were all touched by her love.
