In Loving Memory

Shirley Ann Demmer, born in Detroit, Michigan, on March 19, 1937, passed away on February 15, 2026. The daughter of Anton “Tony” Demmer and Eleanore “Elly” Schwethelm Demmer, Shirley devoted much of her life to a career at the National Bank of Detroit, from which she retired.

Known for her kindness, graciousness, and cheerfulness, Shirley had a thoughtful habit of never arriving empty-handed. A collector and curator of cherished items, she delighted in saving mementos from her life. An avid lover of cats, her own or strays, she fed them all.  Shirley was an enthusiastic conversationalist, spending many hours conversing with all who crossed her path.  And wherever she went, her signature red lipstick was always part of her charm.

She shared a close bond with her first cousins, Dolores Demmer Gailey (Roger), Anna Wagner Stratton (Frank), and Rudolf “Rudi” Wagner (Josy), who preceded her in death.

Shirley is survived by her first cousins once removed: Frank Stratton, Diane Stratton Grassi, John Stratton, Julie Stratton Gutierrez, Michael Gailey, and Kristen Gailey Stevens.

Shirley was also blessed with longstanding friends who became like family: Marlene Brooks, Ruth Patterson, Mary Fura, Cherrye Hartfield, Redric Hartfield, Loretta Mink, Phyllis Kohl, and Maggie.

She will be interred beside her parents at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. Memorials in her honor may be made by those who wish to remember her warmth and loving spirit.
